About Tacoma:
Tacoma, the "City of Destiny," and the Port of Tacoma have evolved into major players in the economy of the Puget Sound, Pacific Northwest and West Coast regions. The city is experiencing a significant urban renaissance with the development of a University of Washington campus, the Washington State Historical Museum, a new convention center (across the street from the Marriott) and the world renowned Chihuly Museum of Glass. Complementing these recent developments are new downtown residences, shops, restaurants, the venerable Pantages Theater, a light rail line and more. About the Conference:
As with last year's conference in San Diego, only a few, but critical themes will comprise the agenda, with a major focus on freight as a key element of the West Coast Corridor Coalition's mission. We will start with meetings of several Coalition committees on the afternoon of Wednesday, August 10th. This will be followed by a hosted reception at the Washington State Historical Museum, where regional council board members, staff, guests and others will confer in an informal setting and take in the breadth and depth of our state's history.
On Thursday morning, attendees will get right to work on driving issues associated with the West Coast Corridor: the import, export and shipment of goods through our ports and over our highways and rail lines. Panels with representatives from ports, trucking firms and railroads will address their challenges and, importantly, identify the infrastructure and policy issues associated with maintaining and expanding a sustainable transportation network up and down the West Coast. Attendees will be informed as to critical freight movement roles played by ports and the challenge of working in concert through the Corridor Coalition to advance system and infrastructure improvements. State DOT representatives will address the status of the Coalition and the building of effective partnerships so all regions of the West benefit.
We will have an opportunity to witness first hand how the Port of Tacoma is tackling the need to move a growing volume of goods over their docks and onto trucks and rail cars via a guided tour of their facilities and operations. We will also tour the Foss Waterway redevelopment. In addition, representatives from several national associations will update us on national issues and legislation, including, of course, the next transportation authorization bill and its implications for regions and states.
