VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - We're a step closer to high-speed trains between Portland and Vancouver. City Councillor Geoff Meggs accompanied Mayor Gregor Robertson to sign the agreement to enhance rail service between the two cities.

Meggs says getting our federal government to drop its $1,500 daily charge on a second Amtrak train is essential to the process. "If we can show the United States and the American authorities we're committed to the development of the route, that's all we need to do in the short haul. They'll add another train, we'll get 35,000 extra visitors a year in Vancouver, and we'll show the American partners that we're prepared to get involved in the long term process."

The agreement means the mayors of the corridor cities can apply for more funding from Washington to start upgrading the route to a high-speed line. Meggs admits we're still several years away but when it's completed, the trip to Seattle could be cut down from four hours to two.

Mayor Robertson and Portland Mayor Sam Adams cited economic and environmental benefits, and say a high-speed line will go a long way in providing an environmentally friendly option for transportation which will help in sustainable development.  Robertson will be presenting the agreement to council and asking for support during the next City Council meeting.
